Music Video Synopsis

The narrative of my music video is a boy who is a burgler meets a girl. The boy however always wears a masked when commiting crime so that the audience think that the boy who meets the girl and the boy who is a criminal are two different people. The mask boy is seen mugging a stranger then seen unmasked meeting the girl. She takes him home to meet her family and the girls sister is the stranger who the boy mugged.

Domino records

Domino was founded in 1993 by Laurence Bell and Jacqui Rice. Domino's first release was Sebadoh's single 'Soul And Fire'.But it was in 2003 when the label really made a name for itself by signing Franz Ferdinand 'Take Me Out', Franz Ferdinand's second single, captured the mood of a nation and became a worldwide hit for the label. In 2006 Domino saw off fierce competition when they signed Arctic Monkeys, making Domino a serious UK label.

British social realism

I know that the arctic monkeys videos for When the sun goes down and a view from the afternoon where influenced by British social realism films such as Saturday night and Sunday morning and the loneliness of the long distance runner.Arctic monkeys even took the title for their first album (whatever people say i am that is what i am not) from the film saturday night and sunday morning. When i make my video i also want to draw insparation from these films and give my video a gritty story line

Conventions of music videos

Artisc performance, or artistic lyrical interpretation conveyed by a character or images.

The original idea of a music video was to allow the audience to watch the performer as they please. Music videos use close ups and long shots to show setting and also show performance.

Music videos are usually edited to the beat to give a sense of correlation between the song and the video this also give the video pace. They are usually set in variety of locations this creates interest to keep the viewer watching.

Brief

1. A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:

  • A website homepage for the band

  • A cover for its release on DVD

  • A magazine advertisement for the DVD

Arctic Monkeys

Arctic monkeys were formed in Sheffield, Yorkshire in 2002 the band consisted of five members songwriter and guitarist Alex Turner , guitarist Jamie Cook, bassist Andy Nicholson and drummer Matt Helders, along Glyn Jones on vocals although Glyn left the band and Alex took over the vocals. The remaining four built up a following through extensive gigging and releasing demo material on CDs which the fans then shared through the internet. Many say that they were the pioneers of this and the band soon built up a large fan base in a very short space of time.

I love the way Arctic monkeys videos have something gritty and British about them just like their songs. I particularly like the video for their second single "When the sun goes down" which was originally a short film called "Scummy" which based around the song, this was then edited down so it fit to the timing of the song.

Analysis of Arctic Monkeys - When The Sun Goes Down

When the video first starts we are straight away introduced to the lead female character (Protagonist). She is dressed in baggy hooded clothes and looks though she may be homeless. The shot is a close up which shows the tired and worn look on her face. All the while the non-diagetic lyrics "I said who's that girl there" are played over the shot, as if to ask the question directly to the audience. Then the words "I wonder what went wrong so that she had to roam the streets" accompanied by medium close up shot of her smoking and stood on the balcony of what seems to be on a high rise building typical of that which would be found on a council estate. These words re-enforce the idea of her being homeless. The video uses straight cuts to move from shot to shot this gives the feel of it being raw and sharp also giving it a quicker pace. Also each shot is cut to last the length of the line of lyric. The next shot is a short tracking shot of a man in a car pulling up to the side of the road on a dark street and the female character walking up and putting her head in the car window. There is a straight cut and she is then seen being lead away by another man. The lyrics "She dunt do major credit cards I doubt she does receipts, it's all not quite legitimate" insinuating that she is a prostitute both with the lyrics and the images onscreen, even though we don't actually see anything. In the next shot the camera is looking directly up at a spiral staircase with the female character walking down it, this could be seen as symbolic of her life been a downwards spiral. There is then an elliptical edit as she reaches the bottom of the stairs. We are then introduced to the male character (Antagonist) as he is sat outside of what seems to be an abandoned warehouse. He has his arm around the female as the lyrics say "And what a scummy man" telling the audience that this man is not going to be a nice man. Then "Just give him half a chance I bet he'll rob you if he can" Accompanied by a two shot of the male and female in a greasy spoon cafe, with the male stealing the females food off her plate. The words "can see it in his eyes yeah that he's got a driving ban amongst some other offences" are played over a close up shot of the main male characters face (the scummy man) then a shot of him in the back of a taxi backing up that indeed he may have a driving ban. "And I've seen him with girls of the night and he told Roxanne to put on her red light"

Arctic Monkeys - Balaclava Song Lyrics

Running off over next doors garden Before the hour is done It's more a question of feeling Than it is a question of fun The confidence is the balaclava I'm sure you'll baffle 'em good Will the ending reek of salty cheeks And runny makeup alone

Or will blood run down the face Of a boy bewildered and scorned And you'll find yourself in a skirmish And you wish you'd never been born And you tie yourself to the tracks And there isn't no going back And it's wrong wrong wrong But we'll do it anyway cause we love a bit of trouble

Are you pulling her from a burning building Or throwing her to the sharks Can only hope that the ending is as pleasurable as the start The confidence is the balaclava, i'm sure you baffle 'em straight And its wrong wrong wrong, she can hardly wait

That's right, he won't let her out his sight Now the shaggers perform And the daggers are drawn Who's the crooks in this crime?
That's right, he won't let her out his sight Now the shaggers perform And the daggers are drawn Who's the crooks in this....Crime!
That's right, he wont let her out his sight That's right, he wont let her out his sight That's right, he wont let her out his sight You'll be able to post that the day held the most for the heist of all time

You knew that it'd be trouble right before the very first kiss Quiet and assuming but you heard that they were the naughtiest She pleaded with you to take it off But you resisted and fought Sorry sweetheart, I'd much rather keep on the balaclava

History of chosen medium

The Beatles
Many would say that the first ever music video was The Beatles A hard days night (1964) , the whole idea behind the film was to give thier fans a glipse of them whenever they wanted to and not just at live shows also the film showed the Beatles in a behind the scenes way.

Bob Dylan
His video Subterranean homesick blues unlike The Beatles a Hard days night, had some sort of relation from the lyrics to the video. In the video we see Bob himself hold up cards with the lyrics written on them. This could be Bob Dylan trying to emphasise his lyrics by putting them on the screen.
